The Safest Country in the World, Qatar, on this Day in History

 

On this day (September 3) in 1971, Qatar gained its independence from the UK. The name Qatar comes from the ancient Roman writer Pliny the Elder who called the inhabitants 'Catharrei'. 

In early 2017, Qatar's total population was 2.6 million: 313,000 Qatari citizens and 2.3 million expatriates. Qatar's official religion is Islam. In terms of income, the country has the third-highest GDP,  and Purchasing Power Parity per capita in the world, and the sixth-highest Gross National Income per capita. It used to be the poorest state in the region. Qatar is classified by the UN as a country of very high human development, having the third-highest Human Development Index in the Arab world after United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Qatar is a World Bank high-income economy, backed by the world's third-largest natural gas reserves and oil reserves.

Qatar is ranked as the safest country in the world for the third time in 2020. It has the lowest murder rate in the world, with often zero intentional homicides per year. Qatar Airways, the national airline of Qatar, has been named the best airline in the world for three consecutive years. It operates domestic flights as well as international flights to all seven continents. Source.


Qatar's main airport, the Hamad International Airport, has been ranked as the best airport in the world. The other best airports are: Tokyo Haneda Airport, Singapore Changi Airport, Incheon International Airport and the Tokyo Narita Airport according to Skytrax.

Qatar has no forests and is the second flattest country in the world (behind the Maldives).

Qatar has the longest continuous bicycle path in the world and it has the longest continuous piece of asphalt concrete in the world (15.7 miles).

Qatar has the fewest natural disasters according to the 2019 World Risk Report, compiled by the United Nations.

Qatar has one of the highest rates of modern slavery proportionate to its population, according to the latest edition of the Global Slavery Index.

Qatar has the world’s lowest female population by percentage of total population. Less than 25% of its population is female, meaning there are three men for every woman.

Qatar has one the fattest populations as well with 71.7% of the population classified as obese.
