The Beatles First Single on This Day in History

This Day in History: The Beatles released their first single/record, Love Me Do, on this day in 1962. Love Me Do was recorded three different times, all with a different drummer (Pete Best, Ringo Starr and session drummer Andy White.) The song was released in the US in 1964 and made it to the number one spot.

This makes you wonder what were the first singles of other big acts over time.

The Rolling Stones first single (1963) was a cover version of Chuck Berry's "Come On" (a song I don't even know).

The Beach Boys first single was Surfin', released in 1962.

Elvis Presley's first single was 1954's "That's All Right" which was written in 1946 by Arthur Crudup.

Pink Floyd's first single was Arnold Layne in 1967.

The Who's first single was "I Can't Explain" in 1965.

Kiss's first single was "Nothin' to Lose" in 1974.

The Eagles first single was was 1972's "Take It Easy."

Aerosmith's first single was "Dream On" in 1973.

Fleetwood Mac's first single was Albatross in 1968.

U2's first single was 11 O'Clock Tick-Tock in 1980.

Van Halen's first single was a cover of The Kink's "You Really Got Me."

The Kink's first single was a cover of the Little Richard song "Long Tall Sally."

Journey's first single was "Wheel in the Sky" in 1978.

Creedence Clearwater Revival first single was "Suzie Q" (1968), which had been a hit for Dale Hawkins in 1957.

Foreigner's first single was "Feels Like the First Time" in 1977.

Black Sabbath's first single was Evil Woman in 1969.

Judas Priest's first single was Rocka Rolla in 1974.

Def Leppard's first single was "Let it Go" in 1981.

Heart's first single was "Magic Man" in 1976.

The Police's first single was "Fall Out" in 1977.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers first single was "Depot Street" in 1975.

The Bay City Rollers first single was "Keep on Dancing" in 1971.

Genesis' first single was "The Silent Sun" in 1968.

REM's first single was "Radio Free Europe" in 1981.

Rush's first single was "Not Fade Away" in 1973.

ZZ Top's first single was "(Somebody Else Been) Shaking Your Tree."

The Electric Light Orchestra's first single was "10538 Overture" in 1970.

Dire Strait's first single was "Sultans of Swing" in 1978.

The Iron Maiden's first single was "Running Free."

Deep Purple's first single was a cover of the Beatles "Help."

As you can see, many first singles were forgettable for many bands, with a few exceptions. Aerosmith's first single may actually be their best song. The Beatle's Love Me Do was certainly a strong and promising start for what came to be a great band.
