Strange & Bizarre Alcohol-Related Deaths on This Day in History

John Hutcherson was involved in a bizarre accident on this day in 2004.

John Hutcherson, 21, drove home drunk with his friend, Francis Brohm, 23, on September 2 that year. Brohm decided he needed to throw up so he hung his head out the passenger window. Hutcherson drove off the road and sideswiped a telephone pole support wire, decapitating Brohm. He continued the final 12 miles to his Atlanta, Georgia home. He parked in the driveway, and went to bed. A neighbor found Brohm's headless body in the truck the next morning.

Hutcherson was sentenced to 5 years in prison.

This is not the most bizarre death while drinking however. Joe Buddy Caine, 35, and a friend decided play catch using a rattlesnake. The snake retaliated by biting both of them, killing Caine. A report in the Tuscaloosa News in 1995 read: “The two were intoxicated when they found the snake and began playing with it. The two would catch the snake by the tail, let it go and catch it again.”

In 207 BC Greek philosopher Chrysippus died laughing after getting his donkey drunk on wine and watching it try to eat figs.

Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan drowned in her hotel bathtub after a night of drinking. There are on average about 10 such deaths a day in the USA.

A Sydney, Australia hotel bar held a drinking competition in 1997, which a 33-year-old computer technician named Allan won by drinking 34 beers, 4 bourbons, and 17 shots of tequila within 1 hour and 40 minutes. Downing all of those spirits spirited young Allan to his death. The hotel was fined the equivalent of $13,100 US dollars.

Michael Warner died after an alcohol enema in 2005. Warner couldn't drink the conventional way and could only imbibe via his backside. Naturally, this takes help, and his wife was arrested after giving him two 1.5 liter bottles of sherry which caused his blood alcohol level to soar to 0.47 percent — almost six times the legal limit.

In 1991, three Eaton Ohio men, after a night of drinking, had a craving for pork chops. Instead of buying pork chops or going to a restaurant, the three decided to steal a 300 pound hog. They loaded the hog in the back of a pickup, and sped off. The hog created a commotion in the back, which caused the vehicle to swerve. After hitting a soft shoulder the truck rolled 40 feet. All three men were ejected from the vehicle and they all died as a result.

In 706 AD, Chinese poet Li Po took a boat out on the water while being drunk. Li Po wanted to kiss the moon’s reflection in the water. He drowned.

In August 2021, a drunk man in India, 65 year old Rama Mahto, in a fit of revenge, bit a snake after it bit him. The snake retaliated by biting him 10 more times. Mahto died the next day.

In Mexico, an inebriated Miguel Anaya Pablo, 60, died after a brawl with his pig. Miguel apparently returned home drunk from a party and begun fighting with a pig which he kept in his home. The animal managed to bite his testicles and severed three fingers of his right hand. He was rushed to hospital but died from infection.

In 1891 Russia, a bear known to be tame, but with a taste for vodka, barged into a tavern and started drinking from a keg of vodka. The bar owner objected and the drunken bear mauled him to death along with his two sons and a daughter. Townsfolk found the boozed up bear passed out in a pool of blood. They shot it.

Again, in Russia, this time in 2013, a Russian man was charged with homicide after killing his friend by shoving a foot up his rear-end. Literally. "According to local reports, Vladimir Krasnov, 28, of Nizhny Novgorod had decided to make good on the oft-heard threat following a drunken fight with his 48-year-old friend Sergei over Krasnov's girlfriend Yelena. Police say Krasnov waited until his friend passed out, and then proceeded to insert his right foot 'into the victim's anus and rectum.' Sergei suffered severe internal bleeding as a result, and eventually died at the scene."~Gawker
