The Walker Family Murders on This Day in History

 

This day in history: On this day in 1959, Christine and Cliff Walker and their two children were murdered at their home in Osprey, Florida. The case is still unsolved.

Authorities believe that 24-year-old Christine Walker arrived at the family's farm home around 4 pm on Saturday, December 19, 1959, where she was raped, then murdered by gunshot. Her husband Cliff, 25, then arrived with their 3-year-old son Jimmie and 1-year-old daughter Debbie. Cliff was ambushed and killed by gunshot. Jimmie and Debbie were then murdered. Jimmie was shot, and Debbie was shot in addition to being drowned in the bathtub. The actual cause of death is unknown, and she could have been shot in the bathtub. News stories noted there were gifts around the Christmas tree.

Physical evidence left at the scene included a bloody cowboy boot, a cellophane strip from a Kool cigarette wrapper, and a fingerprint on the bathtub faucet handle.

A serial killer named Emmett Monroe Spencer confessed to the murders, but the confession was discredited by Sarasota County Sheriff Ross Boyer, who labeled Spencer a pathological liar. Spencer's confession was "determined to be cleverly constructed from real murders written up in newspapers and true-crime novels that he liked to read." In 1994, a bartender in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania contacted the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, claiming that one of her customers had boasted of killing the Walker family; this tip was never verified.

Police never identified a motive, and 587 people were suspects at one time or another.

In 2012, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office began investigating possible links between the Walker family murders and Perry Smith and Richard "Dick" Hickock, who had been convicted and executed for the 1959 murders of the Clutter family in Holcomb, Kansas. The Clutter murders were the topic of Truman Capote's 1965 best-selling true crime book In Cold Blood. While that book devoted several pages to the Walker case, it dismissed a possible connection to Hickock and Smith, asserting that the two men had an alibi for that day. 

In August 2013, the Sarasota County Sheriff's office announced they were unable to find a match between the DNA of either Perry Smith or Richard Hickock with the samples in the Walker family murder.

Serial Killer Anthony Joyner on This Day in History

This Day in History: Anthony Joyner was born on this day in 1962. Anthony Joyner is an American serial killer and rapist who raped and murdered at least six elderly women at a nursing home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from January to July 1983, but is suspected in 18 total deaths that occurred there. Tried and convicted only for his confirmed murders, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

When pressed for a motive, Joyner gave contradictory information: he insisted that due to certain reasons and circumstances he had no sex life, leaving him sexually frustrated. And as he was unable to be intimate with girls his age, he was left in a state of anger that led to him raping and strangling the patients at the nursing home - he claimed to kill them only because they knew him well and could get him imprisoned. Joyner's ex-girlfriend, who briefly had an intimate relationship with him, told police that he began to suffer from an inferiority complex after breaking up with her, growing increasingly worried about being labelled as gay, which prompted him to demonstrate his masculine behavior in every way possible. According to her testimony, Joyner wanted attention, as she claimed that a few days before his arrest, he had contacted her, claiming that he would soon become famous and be written about in the media.

Roman Polanski's Run from the Law on this Day in History

This Day in History: Film director Roman Polanski skipped bail and fled to France on this day in 1978, after pleading guilty to charges of engaging in sex with an underage girl.

At Jack Nicholson’s Mulholland Drive house in 1977, Polanski gave a young girl Champagne and a Quaalude and sodomized her. She was only 13. 

Polanski was arrested and charged with drugging and raping the 13-year-old girl. As a result of a plea bargain, he pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of unlawful sex with a minor. In 1978, after learning that the judge planned to reject his plea deal and impose a prison term instead of probation, he fled to Paris. A number of other women have later accused Polanski of raping them when they were teenagers. An Interpol red notice was issued for his arrest, and since then rarely leaves France.

This however did not stop Polanski from making movies, and it did not stop major Hollywood actors from working with him.
