"The Monster Mash" on This Day in History

This day in history: Bobby "Boris" Picket and the Crypt Kickers hit the top of the charts with "The Monster Mash" on this day in 1962. The song would be re-released several more times on to the charts. The BBC had banned the record from airplay in 1962 on the grounds that the song was "too morbid." The "Transylvania Twist" mentioned in the song became its own song eventually. There is even a song ABOUT the Monster Mash recorded by Blair Packham. "Monsters' Holiday", a Christmas-themed follow up to the Monster Mash was released in December of 1962.

JFK's Tax Cuts on This Day in History

This day in history: On this day in 1962, President Kennedy announced in a press conference that he would seek "an across-the-board reduction in personal and corporate income taxes", commenting that "Our tax structure, as presently weighted, exerts too heavy a drain on a prospering economy." At the time, earnings of more than $200,000 were in a 91% federal tax bracket. In 1965, the top rate would drop to 70%. By 1988, the highest rate would be 28% for income over $31,050.

By January of 1963, Kennedy would go on to say: “The largest single barrier to full employment of our manpower and resources and to a higher rate of economic growth is the unrealistically heavy drag of federal income taxes on private purchasing power, initiative and incentive.”

“Our tax system still siphons out of the private economy too large a share of personal and business purchasing power and reduces the incentive for risk, investment and effort — thereby aborting our recoveries and stifling our national growth rate.”

"Kennedy’s speechwriter and longtime aide, Ted Sorensen, said, 'Kennedy was a fiscal conservative. Most of us and the press and historians have, for one reason or another, treated Kennedy as being much more liberal than he so regarded himself at the time… in fiscal matters, he was extremely conservative, very cautious about the size of the budget.'” 21 Reasons JFK Was Actually A Conservative

The Last Execution for Armed Robbery on This Day in History

This day in history: The last execution of an American for armed robbery, without homicide, took place on this day in 1962 in Huntsville, Texas as an African-American man, 20-year-old Herbert Lemuel Bradley of Dallas, was put to death in the electric chair. Bradley, who had shot an elderly grocer six times in the robbery, told reporters before he died, "I have no complaints. A man has to die sometime, but I don't think this has been fair," noting that he shared the prison with convicts serving terms of 5 to 25 years for armed robbery. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals had upheld the death sentence on February 28, noting that the victim was still in the hospital more than a year after being shot four times in the stomach during a gunfight.

Walmart on This Day in History

This Day in History: The first Walmart store opened for business in Rogers, Arkansas on this day in 1962. Walmart is the world's largest company by revenue, with US$514.405 billion and it is also the largest private employer in the world with 2.2 million employees. While many dislike Walmart, others argue that Walmart has done more to lift more low-income people out of poverty than any charitable organization or government agency in the world. Wal-Mart's everyday low retail prices in groceries, prescription drugs, clothing, and household items has significant economic benefits for the poor. Walmart also is at the forefront in many emergency response efforts. Ryan Ferguson in his article (My 5 Favorite Evil Corporations) states: "I don’t shop at Walmart very often, but they're a massive value creator for society that everyone hates. Rich people who prefer to imagine that poor people don’t exist like to lobby cities to prevent Walmart, ignoring how much they have improved the lives of people all over the world. They are the driving force of lowering the prices on all sorts of products. They have democratized wealth by pushing down supply costs and giving people access to inexpensive versions of almost any product available." https://fee.org/articles/my-5-favorite-evil-corporations/
