Jesse Owens (and Hitler) on This Day in History

This day in history: Jesse Owens won the 100 metre dash, defeating Ralph Metcalfe, at the Berlin Olympics on this day in 1936. There is a popular myth that Hitler snubbed Jesse Owens at the 1936 Olympics. As the story goes, after Owens won one gold medal, Hitler, incensed, stormed out of Olympic Stadium so he wouldn't have to congratulate Owens on his victory. However, this story isn't true. It was fabricated by the media. Fake News it appears is nothing new. The facts are simple. Hitler did not congratulate Owens, but that day he didn't congratulate anybody else either, not even the German winners. As a matter of fact, Hitler didn't congratulate anyone after the first day of the competition. It was reported that the German leader gave the American sprinter a “friendly little Nazi salute,” and Owens said that the two exchanged congratulatory waves. However, it was the conduct of Roosevelt– who never invited Owens to the White House or acknowledged his triumphs–that disappointed the Olympic champion. “Hitler didn’t snub me—it was our president who snubbed me,” he said months after the Games. “The president didn’t even send me a telegram.”

Another popular belief is that the games marked a humiliating moment for the Nazis because a few blacks walked away with a fistful of medals while Hitler had predicted the Teutonic lads would be the big winners, proof of the superman abilities of the white race. In reality, the competition was anything but a German humiliation. It is forgotten that Germany managed to pick up more medals than all the other countries combined. Hitler was pleased with the outcome.

Eva Braun on This Day in History

This day in history: Eva Braun was born on this day in 1912. Braun was a German photographer who was the longtime companion and later the wife of Adolf Hitler. She was by his side to the end when she bit down on a cyanide capsule in the Fuhrer bunker in April of 1945.

Or did she? Some believe that Hitler and Braun escape to Argentina?

"It is common knowledge that Argentina was a safe haven for many Nazis after World War II. President Juan Peron was a Nazi sympathizer with close ties to other European dictators such as Mussolini, and he arranged safe passage for many high-ranking officials to come to South America in the years following the war." Source

"No one believed the Russians' story of Hitler's suicide in the bunker...As early as the summer of 1945, there were headlines asking, ‘Where is Hitler?' all over the world...The more you look into it, the less credible the official version becomes, and the more plausible an alternative theory seems." ~Pablo Weschler

"Exactly when, where, and how Hitler died, however, remains a mystery. We suspect from his reported weekly telephone calls to Ida Eichhorn that he was still alive in Mendoza in late 1964. Since the FBI closed its file on Hitler in 1970, it is likely that Hitler died somewhere in South America sometime between late 1964 and 1970. And what became of Eva Braun, who had accompanied him to South America? She was 23 years Hitler’s junior and was rumored to be living in the swanky Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires as late as the 1990’s...There is reason to suspect that Hitler had children. There have been rumors that Hitler left behind a son who eventually did advanced studies of some sort under an assumed name in Switzerland and today lives in the South American nation of Brazil. A law firm in Buenos Aires told Abel Basti on condition of anonymity claims that it is acquainted with and knows the whereabouts of a daughter of Hitler. Around 1985, a woman claiming to be a daughter of Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun visited a non-governmental charitable organization in Argentina known as the Center for Legal and Social Studies (CELS)." ~Did Hitler Escape to South America? The Left-Wing Nazis on This Day in History

This day in history: The German Workers' Party, which would become the Nazi Party, is founded in Munich on this day in 1919. According to Wikipedia: "The German Workers' Party (German: Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, DAP) was a short-lived far-right political party established in Weimar Germany after World War I. It was the precursor of the Nazi Party, which was officially known as the National Socialist German Workers' Party (German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, NSDAP)."

Do you see the contradiction above? There has been a long time effort to make Hitler and the Nazis out to be right-wing and "not really socialist." Let me share the following from Planned Chaos (written in 1947) by Ludwig von Mises: "The philosophy of the Nazis, the German National Socialist Labour Party, is the purest and most consistent manifestation of the anticapitalistic and socialistic spirit of our age...The slogan into which the Nazis condensed their economic philosophy, viz., Gemeinnutz geht vor Eigennutz (i.e., the commonweal ranks above private profit), is likewise the idea underlying the American New Deal and the Soviet management of economic affairs....It implies that profit-seeking business harms the vital interests of the immense majority, and that it is the sacred duty of popular government to prevent the emergence of profits by public control of production and distribution...For more than seventy years the German professors of political science, history, law, geography and philosophy eagerly imbued their disciples with a hysterical hatred of capitalism...At the turn of the century the immense majority of the Germans were already radical supporters of socialism...The Nazis were quick to adopt the Soviet methods. They imported from Russia: the one-party system and the pre-eminence of this party in political life; the paramount position assigned to the secret police; the concentration camps; the administrative execution or imprisonment of all opponents; the extermination of the families of suspects and of exiles; the methods of propaganda; the organization of affiliated parties abroad and their employment for fighting their domestic governments and espionage and sabotage; the use of the diplomatic and consular service for fomenting revolution; and many other things besides. There were nowhere more docile disciples of Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin than the Nazis were."

"The Nazis were left-wing socialists. Yes, the National Socialist Workers Party of Germany, otherwise known as the Nazi Party, was indeed socialist and it had a lot in common with the modern left. Hitler preached class warfare, agitating the working class to resist 'exploitation' by capitalists, particularly Jewish capitalists, of course. Their programs called for the nationalization of education, health care, transportation, and other major industries. They instituted and vigorously enforced a strict gun control regimen. They encouraged pornography, illegitimacy, and abortion, and they denounced Christians as right-wing fanatics. Yet a popular myth persists that the Nazis themselves were right-wing extremists. This insidious lie biases the entire political landscape today." Source

Madame Tussaud on This Day in History

This day in history: Anna Maria "Marie" Tussaud was born on this day in 1761. She was a French artist known for her wax sculptures and the Madame Tussauds wax museum she founded in London. Madame Tussauds also has wax museums in a number of other major cities.

Marie's mother was the housekeeper for a doctor who made wax models to illustrate anatomy. She picked up the trade from him...and in 1777, she created her first wax figure, that of Voltaire. She branched out and made wax figures of other notable people in her day, and she even toured for decades with her wax figures. She renamed her show as Madame Tussaud's. In 1802, she accepted an invitation from Paul Philidor, a lantern and phantasmagoria pioneer, to exhibit her work alongside his show at the Lyceum Theatre, London. From 1831, she took a series of short leases on the upper floor of "Baker Street Bazaar" (on the west side of Baker Street, Dorset Street, and King Street in London). This became Tussaud's first permanent home in 1836.

The wax museums have hosted the likenesses of hundreds of people over the years, everyone from Aaliyah to Zoe Saldana. Some figures however have been more controversial than others. "In 2008, a German man rushed past security on the opening day of the Berlin Madame Tussauds and ripped Hitler's head off. A sign asked people to refrain from posing with or taking pictures of the statue, but didn't specify that decapitation was prohibited as well. 'It disturbs me that Hitler should become a tourist attraction,' the attacker said." Source

Madame Tussauds rebuilt the Hitler figure, stating, "Figures are chosen for their popularity or for their influence on the path of history -- for better or for worse. Adolf Hitler stands for a decisive part of Berlin's history, which cannot be denied."

It has since been removed due to pressure. However, other dictators, such as Josef Stalin and Mao are allowed to stay up, even though they killed more people.

The news satire site Clickhole reported that the Tom Hanks wax figure scandalously bit a child. They sadly reported "'Tom Hanks was an integral part of our wax museum and brought immeasurable joy to many over the years, but once he began to act aggressively, we had no option but to utilize one of the furnaces that we had installed for this very reason,' said curator Benjamin Davis as he defended the staff’s actions during a recent press conference. 'Safety is our No. 1 priority, and we apologize to anyone who was affected by this loss, as well as anyone in the museum who was subjected to hearing the statue’s screams resonate through the floorboards while it slowly melted.'"

Marie Tussaud's life has imitated her art, as she now also has a wax figure of herself.

Preacher of Evil, Niccolò Machiavelli on This Day in History

This Day in History: Niccolò Machiavelli died on this day in 1527. He is best known for writing The Prince, a pessimistic look at human nature and political philosophy. As he writes: “It is much safer to be feared than loved because ... love is preserved by the link of obligation which, owing to the baseness of men, is broken at every opportunity for their advantage; but fear preserves you by a dread of punishment which never fails.” He argued that the ruler or government ought to do good when possible, but they must not be afraid to do evil to stay in power. Other men are willing to do evil in order to overturn the leader's rule, and because of this fatal tendency, leaders must also do evil from time to time.

As a result, the word “Machiavellian” has come to denote someone who is cunning and unscrupulous. The Prince made it into the Catholic Church's first "Index of Forbidden Books" in 1557.

"Niccolò Machiavelli was reviled throughout Europe during the 16th century and on into the next two centuries. He was considered to be someone unique in the history of the West, a conscious preacher of evil, a diabolic figure who had unleashed the demons in the world of politics. The English used his given name as a synonym for the Devil, 'Old Nick.' As Macaulay put it, 'Out of his surname they have coined an epithet for a knave, and out of his Christian name a synonym for the Devil.'"~Murray N. Rothbard

Italian dictator Benito Mussolini wrote a discourse on The Prince.

Soviet leader Joseph Stalin read The Prince and annotated his own copy. 20th-century Italian-American mobsters were influenced by The Prince.

Hitler kept a copy of The Prince by his bedside.

John Gotti and Roy DeMeo would regularly quote The Prince and consider it to be the "Mafia Bible".

In the movie "A Bronx Tale", local mob boss says that while in jail, he passed the time by reading Machiavelli, whom he describes as "a famous writer from 500 years ago"—and then tells him how Machiavelli's philosophy, including his famous advice about how it is preferable for a leader to be feared rather than loved if he cannot be both—have made him a successful mob boss.

Rapper Tupac Shakur read Machiavelli while in prison and was so influenced by his work that he eventually changed his rap name from 2Pac to Makaveli.
