The Child Prodigy with a 400 IQ on This Day in History

This day in history: Adragon De Mello was born on this day in 1976. It is claimed that Adragon De Mello has an IQ of 400...even though IQ tests don't really score that high. Adragon De Mello graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a degree in computational mathematics in 1988, at age 11. At the time, he was the youngest college graduate in U.S. history.

His early achievements may have been more due to endless hard work than to inherent intellectual capabilities. Much of the hype was due to his father, Agustin Eastwood De Mello. His father planned an ideal life for a "boy genius" before Adragon was born; it included not only graduating from college early, but also getting a doctorate in physics by age 12, winning the Nobel Prize in Physics by age 16, being elected a senator by age 20 (US senators must be at least 30 years old), becoming president of the United States by age 26 (the minimum age set by the US Constitution is 35), then head of a world government by age 30, and chairman of an intergalactic government after that. Since his father had set the goal that his son would become a Nobel Prize winner by age 16, he obsessively pushed his son in mathematics and other academic subjects from an early age. For example, when doing math homework, his father insisted that he solve an equation five times, even when he got the correct answer on the first attempt.

His father also sought publicity for his son. In 1987, while at university, Adragon and his father were interviewed by Morley Safer on 60 Minutes II. They also appeared on 48 Hours and The Tonight Show. During these interviews, Adragon would repeat the goals his father had chosen, saying he wanted to get a Ph.D. in physics and win a Nobel Prize by age 16 or 17.

When his father enrolled him in Popper-Keizer, a school for gifted children, standardized tests Adragon took suggested he was around the 85th percentile for students his age, where most students enrolled in such schools were in the 95th percentile. His father removed him from the school for gifted students "after tests showed the boy was less gifted than his father believed".

The father passed away in 2003, and Adragon De Mello now works as an estimator for a commercial painting company.

Today is National Police Memorial Day

Today in history: Today is National Police Memorial Day. National Police Memorial Day falls on the nearest Sunday to September 29. This year, it is observed on October 1.

Throughout most of human history, there weren't any police departments. "The first truly modern police department was created by Napoleon I in the wake of the French Revolution. In fact, the Paris Prefecture of Police was the first uniformed, professionally organized police department in the world. The London Metropolitan Police Department was organized and led by Sir Robert Peele shortly after, and in 1838 the concept reached Boston and New York City by 1844." Source

Did you know that modern police departments won't hire you if you are too smart?

"It is not a myth. It is a court case that dates to 2000.

Robert Jordan, a 49-year-old college graduate, scored a 33 on an intelligence test he took as part of the application process to become a police officer in the town of New London, Connecticut. The score meant Jordan had an IQ of 125. The average score for police officers was a 21-22, or an IQ of 104. New London would only interview candidates who scored between 20 and 27. Jordan sued but lost, as the court ruled that being smart was not a protected category and the standard of only hiring average applicants was equally enforced.

So why bother? The argument goes that police work can inherently be boring and repetitive. A person who is highly intelligent will probably get bored, and look for a new job. When this happens, the department has to recruit and train a replacement, which takes time and money. They figured it was better to just hire average - intelligence applicants who were less likely to become bored and dissatisfied.

I’m not saying this argument makes sense. In fact, I think it is profoundly stupid. But that is the argument the police recruiter used when they declined Jordan.

So next time you see a policeman caught up in some sort of abuse or misconduct, remind yourself that they deliberately screen out the smart ones." Source

Actor James Woods on This Day in History

This day in history: American actor James Woods was born on this day (April 19) in 1947. The first I've seen him in was The Onion Field alongside Ted Danson in 1979. That was a great movie by a great writer (Joseph Wambaugh).

Woods has what is probably the highest IQ in Hollywood (180-184) but I often see him excluded from online lists of the highest IQ's. Consider that Albert Einstein's IQ is said to be 160.

Today Woods is known for being critical of the Left, and he has been kicked off Twitter a few times, despite being one of the more interesting accounts to follow. After Elon Musk's release of the Twitter Files, journalist Matt Taibbi reported that the Democratic National Committee requested a tweet made by Woods, related to Hunter Biden, be removed from Twitter.

Woods also has an interesting 9/11 story. From Wikipedia: "On August 1, 2001, Woods was on a flight from Boston to Los Angeles. On the flight he noticed four men near him acting suspiciously. He said that they never drank anything, ordered food service or talked to anybody, just whispering to each other. Woods reported his suspicions to the co-pilot in flight, and he claimed that those concerns were passed on to the FAA. On the evening of September 11, Woods called the FBI and repeated his concerns; they interviewed him at his home the next morning. Woods believed that he had encountered four of the nineteen terrorists/hijackers, who were just on the flight to study it in preparation for the attacks. Woods claims he has been interviewed several times by FBI agents regarding this incident. He has confirmed that he looked at pictures of the hijackers and has identified two terrorists as being among the men that he had seen on his flight."

Alfred Binet (and the IQ Test) on This Day in History

This day in history: French psychologist Alfred Binet was born on this day in 1857. Binet invented the first practical IQ test, the Binet–Simon test. Intelligence Quotient testing is fascinating, but became unpopular with many as it also exposed the intelligence differences between races and the sexes. It is interesting to reflect that the IQ test was invented not to determine how smart people are, but how stupid.

“Incredibly intelligent people always seem odd to those who are not as sharp.”
― Alexei Maxim Russell, Why Not-World

“I don't know, and have no intention of finding out. IQ is like dick size - if you have to measure, you're way too invested in it. And both are gauche to discuss in polite company. (Upon being asked his IQ on Quora)”
― Adrian Lamo
