Things You Didn't Know that Happened on April Fools Day

 

This Day in History: Newfoundland became a province of Canada on April Fools Day in 1949.

Singapore became a British crown colony on April 1 1867.

Apple Computer was founded on April 1 1977.

On June 19, 2007, the Illinois Senate passed Senate Resolution 255, which designated April 1 of every year as Cheap Trick Day in the State of Illinois in honor of the rock group Cheap Trick.

It is believed by some that the Last Supper was held on April 1. 

King George II of Greece died on April 1, 1947. Because that happened on April Fools Day few actually believed the report. 

Other examples of genuine news on 1 April mistaken as a hoax include:
1 April 1946: Warnings about the Aleutian Island earthquake's tsunami that killed 165 people in Hawaii and Alaska.
1 April 2004: Gmail is announced to the public by Google.
1 April 2005: News that the comedian Mitch Hedberg had died on 29 March 2005.
1 April 2005: Announcement about Powerpuff Girls Z, by Aniplex, Cartoon Network and Toei Animation.
1 April 2009: Announcement that the long running soap opera Guiding Light was being cancelled.
1 April 2011: Isaiah Thomas declared for the NBA draft.

On April Fools Day in 1143 John II Komnenos cut himself with a poisoned arrow during a boar hunt and subsequently died from an infection.

Last year, a 57 year old woman named Pamela Sisco sent out a text about an active shooter situation at a plant in Sprinfield, Ohio as an April Fools joke. "Every available unit, to include our surrounding villages and townships, responded to the scene and the first Deputy made entry into the facility at 11:46 AM," one officer said. Sisco was later arrested.

In 1996, as an April Fools Day prank, the Taco Bell Corporation took out a full-page ad that appeared in six major newspapers saying that it had bought the Liberty Bell and was renaming it the Taco Liberty Bell. The National Historic Park in Philadelphia received hundreds of outraged calls. 

On April Fools Day 1997, Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak and Jeopardy host Alex Trebek swapped shows for the day. 

On April Fools Day in 1998, Burger King took out a full-page ad introducing a Whopper designed especially for left-handed customers. The new burger would contain the same ingredients as the original but rotated 180°. "Southpaws eagerly tried to order the burger the next day, but they had to wait in line behind right-handed folks equally caught up with making sure they got the correct Whopper. The thought that a burger is basically, you know, a circle apparently never crossed their minds." Source

Google actually lost a python in their offices on April Fools Day 2007. When it was announced no one believed it.

The Gremlin, considered one of the worst cars ever built, was first introduced on April Fools Day 1970.
