Iaw among Jews, Pagans, and Christians in Ancient
Egypt
Last year at the annual meeting I presented evidence
that showed the usage of the name Iaw as found, e.g.,
in 4QLXXLevb has a non-mystical prehistory: evidence
from early Christian onomastica that were surely based
on no longer extant earlier Jewish exemplars from
Egypt indicates that, before the name moved into the
magical and gnostic spheres where it was so prevalent,
this Greek form of the divine name was freely used by
some Jews. By utilizing testimony from other sources,
especially the Elephantine papyri, Diodorus Sicilus,
and magical papyri, I have established a continuum for
the usage of this name among Jews, pagans, and then
later gnostic and other Christians in Egypt. Analyses
of Diodorus, the Roman litterateur Varro, and
Herennius Philo's reports of Iao as the Jewish God,
the emperor Gaius' possible use of it to Philo of
Alexandria, as well as other evidence indicate that
there existed a group of Jews who, in direct
contradiction to the well-known desuetude of God's
name verbally, intentionally employed it in this
particular form. The phenomenon can be dated from the
Hellenization of Egypt under the Ptolemies to at least
the first century BCE, and possibly later. The
identification of these Jews is explored, as is (1)
their possible motives for standing up against the
contrary trend so prevalent in Judaism, (2) how far
afield the use of Iao spread, and (3) how and when it
moved from its non-mystical early Jewish usage to its
better known adoption in magical and gnostic contexts.
Implications for academic debates on the divine name
in the LXX's textual history, the Jewish origins of
gnosticism, and syncretism in the Greco-Roman world
are all significant issues to be considered."
